Standing straight can do wonders for your image; you should ensure you’re standing upright at all times as nothing ruins a good pose than slouching. To achieve good posture image your head is being pulled upwards by an invisible string.

Hannah Sandling warns though; “Holding your stomach in will give a more toned appearance to the abdomen, even if you are in great shape, but it is important to remember not to hold your breath, as the concentration will usually show in the picture and you will look more frozen than gorgeous.”

Unless you are fashion model skinny you should turn your body slightly from the camera which is always slimming. Generally speaking, your entire body should never be square with the camera, always be at some angle, usually 45° or so.

If you stand square to the camera you are always going to look wider, but by simply twisting your body a little you can shave off a good few inches.

Relax Your Shoulders;

People have a tendency to tighten and raise their shoulders when they get nervous. This causes a few problems as it makes your shoulders appear narrower than they really are and your neck seems shorter. More importantly however, it creates a feeling and look of tenseness. Let your shoulders fall naturally to create a natural and relaxed look.

Feminine Curves;

With the invisible thread tugging at the top of your head arch your back a little. The slight curve in the back is the result of standing up straight and pulling the shoulders back which, in turn, thrusts the bust out. Then keep your chin slightly down and your eyes up a little avoiding double chins and wrinkled foreheads.

To reduce the look of a potential double chin, lean forward slightly at the waist and then tilt your head slightly backward. This keeps your face in its normal position, and the tilt at the waist cancels the backward tilt of your head.

Placing a hand, a clutch bag or a bouquet on your hip, you create the illusion of a smaller waist and smaller hips. The hand on the hip also creates a curve that holds your arm away from the body and highlights any muscle definition.

Hannah tells us that “When striking a pose, the professionals rarely keep their arms straight, just look at any glossy magazine to see what I mean. An arm squashed up against your rib cage can make it look wider and flabbier. So, when you are having your photo taken, try bending one or both arms, even if only a little, to make the pose look less artificial and mannequin like. Likewise, do not keep both legs entirely straight and welded together. Always leave a gap and keep legs slightly bent.”

Smile;

You also do not have to use a big smile for every pose. Sometimes trying a small smile, a pout, a laugh, a scowl, or even a frown, can give some variety to your facial expressions and help you stand out. Many celebrities will mouth the alphabet’s vowels to create a natural looking smile on the red carpet.

All the suggestions and little tips and tricks about posing should be used sparingly, moving in fractions of a centimetre. Tilting your head right down with your eyes open wide will give a crazed look, where a little tilt and a small lean won’t turn you into Kate Moss but will with each one improve your presented image a little bit and the end result should add up to a noticeable change in your pose, confidence and photographs.
