A wedding band is the most symbolic piece of bridal jewellery that most people wear, representing the union of two people. The third figure of the left hand was believed by ancient Egyptians to have a vein that led straight to the heart. This is how the ring finger became endowed with the important duty of wearing wedding rings. Once married, most people seldom take off their wedding rings, which also symbolize their faithfulness for each other.

The forerunner of today's engagement ring, a slim iron hoop ring, symbolizing the cycle of life and eternity, was given to brides in ancient Rome from 23 to 79 A.D. as a public pledge that the marriage contract would be honoured. The tradition of a man proposing with a gold ring dates as far back as 860 AD, when Pope Nicholas I stated that a man should give his bride a gold ring to show his personal financial sacrifice for her hand in marriage. One of the earliest recorded instances of a diamond ring given specifically to seal a betrothal was during the marriage of Constanzo Sforza and Camilla d'Aragona of Pesaro, Italy, in 1475. Archduke Maxamillian in 1477 further established the tradition of a diamond engagement ring in his marriage proposal to Mary of Burgundy. At this time diamonds were considered a talisman of good fortune for a husband and wife, although men did not start wearing bands until early 1900s.

West London wedding photographs packages.
Traditional Half Round Wedding Bands
These bands are plain and classic in design. They are available in 14k and 18k yellow or white gold and platinum. A new process called comfort fit makes the inside of the rings slightly round, which makes the rings more comfortable for wear.

Two Tone Rings
A two tone wedding ring combines yellow and white gold, or yellow and rose gold for a unique, artistic look. Since gold comes in a number of assorted hues, there are many combinations of multiple coloured designs available for those who fancy colourful jewellery.

Titanium Bands
Titanium is increasing in popularity because this affordable metal is extremely light and durable. Wearing bands made from titanium is extra comfortable due to its weightless feel, so people who are not used to wearing jewellery may find this a good alternative to gold or platinum. One downside is that they cannot be re-sized.

Platinum Bands
Platinum bands usually come with a polished, mirror finish to accentuate the material's best qualities. It is a better option for people who prefer white gold because doesn't need to be re-rhodiumed to maintain it's brightness. However, platinum is currently the priciest among all precious metals in jewellery making.

Precious Gems

75% of men will buy a diamond engagement ring but there are plenty of other stones to choose from, which will have a large bearing on colour and cost (the fifth ‘C’!), although when considering precious gems for a ring, remember that it will likely be worn every day for the rest of your life. Therefore, while softer stones can be beautiful, they aren't the best choices for an engagement or wedding ring.

The Mohs scale registers a stone's ability to resist abrasion; 10 (diamonds) is the strongest and 1 (talc) is the weakest. Anything less than a Mohs scale 7 is not recommended for an engagement ring. If you are a person who does a lot of activity with their hands (how long does a manicure last on you?) then it is advised to limit your selection to rubies, sapphires and diamonds.

How much you spend is a personal matter, but you will no doubt hear, especially from the ladies, that one to two months' salary is the norm. This however, is believed to stem from the De Beers' publicity machine. De Beers coincidently having a near monopoly on diamond supplies!
You should however, spend whatever you like and can realistically afford and forget any thoughts that a diamond ring is a sound investment. A retailer can mark up a new diamond ring by up to 100%, so it could lose up to half its value the moment that you leave the shop. Even with a diamond bought at the virtually wholesale rates of London's jewellery centre, Hatton Garden, it could take more than five years to regain its purchase price. We’d also hope that it is something that you’d never want to sell anyway!
