Advice

When planning your wedding day make sure you allow sufficient time for your wedding photographer to get some great shots of the two of you together as well as the formal group shots. Brides always think that they will have heaps of time for photo’s before the ceremony, especially with our coverage starting early with the bride’s preparations but somehow time always seems to disappear and before you know it, you have to be off to the church/ venue.

Try to keep the room tidy so the pictures don’t get filled with clutter or anything you’d rather not be seen and make sure that you have a small area, preferably close to a window for nice light, cleared for some pictures of you and your bridesmaids once you are all dressed up. Before leaving for the venue it is an ideal opportunity to get some pictures with Mum and Dad. You only get this opportunity once so plan enough time for your pictures together.

It is very important to finish getting ready before the guests begin to arrive. You can help by making sure everyone is ready for photographs (completely dressed, with flowers pined, etc) before the assigned times. The best thing to do is tell everyone involved with photos to be ready at least 30 min before the intended start time. Remember that the photographer will have to leave before the bride leaving enough time to capture pictures of the groom and the groomsmen. Make sure the groom and groomsmen are dressed and pinning on flowers a half hour before their scheduled shoot time. Most times they forget until its time to start and this can take up to 15 to 30 minutes of your photography time.

When planning the wedding make sure there is enough time during the day set aside for the photographs. A picture itself may only take a moment to produce, literally in the click of a button, but there is far more going on than meets the eye. For example, assembling groups (getting people out of the bar!), posing the subjects, getting the lighting right and so on. So for the best pictures, make sure the photographer has time to do what you are paying him to do.

To help move things along give your photographer a list of family and friends names along with the groups that you want. It is easier for the photographer to get someone’s attention if he/she knows his or her name.

Make sure you give this list to everyone you want photographed ahead of time so they know when and where to be. Also inform them ahead of time that it is important for everyone who is being photographed to stay in the area of the photographer. A lot of time can be lost if we have to stop and search for people when it’s their turn. If you want to allow family photography during the pose sessions, it is very important to inform them ahead of time to let the photographer get their shots first but letting family and friends take photos will slow the sessions down so more time will need to be scheduled.

Help the photographer by paying attention to them when they are trying to take their shots, you will be in big demand from everyone and they all will want their special shot, especially at times like the cake cutting, signing the register and the first dance. Remember the photographer is there to get great shots for you, so when they are pointing the camera at you follow their direction and look only at their camera, or where directed. Once the photographer has their shots they will make wake for the paparazzi to get their shots.

A common mistake is that the time allocated to the photographs is treated as an almost contingency for the rest of the day. Remember that treating the photographer’s time like this will result in less pictures being taken, and it is often at the expense of the requested must have and formal shots, as the time has simply not been made available.
