Advice

Whether a traditional wedding or a more contemporary Civil service, most brides have a bouquet. Although the tradition of throwing is diminishing, with most now opting to keep their bouquets or use a smaller ‘toss bouquet’. Professional freeze drying costs start around £60, or you can try yourself at home.

If having your bouquet professionally dried then it will need to be sent to the florist the day after the wedding.

There are two ways to dry flowers at home; the simple method is to hang your wedding bouquet upside down in a cool, dark closet for about a week. Once the flowers are completely dried, you can spray them with a dried flower spray or hair spray, to protect them.

For the more complicated method you will need to carefully take the bouquet apart and trim the flower stems down (you want to preserve the flowers, not the stems). Layer an inch of silica gel (which will absorb the water) into an air tight container(s) and lay the flowers from your wedding bouquet one by one in the gel. Keep similar sized flowers together as they take the same amount of time to dry. Make sure the flowers are spaced evenly apart and that they do not touch one another. Then slowly place more of the silica gel around the flowers in the containers. Use your finger to mound the gel up around the flowers, and then place the lids on the containers tightly. Carefully place all of the containers in a cool, dry place where they will not be disturbed. The smaller flowers usually take about three days, while the larger varieties can take up to a week to dry. After all of the flowers from your wedding bouquet are dry, you will need to carefully remove them from the silica gel. Then, use florist’s wire to attach the stems together. A photo from the day will help you remember how the bouquet was arranged. Once complete spray with hair or dried flower spray to protect them.

Professionally dried flowers will best preserve the natural look of the bouquet, but the silica gel DIY method is a close second; the simple hang drying method will totally change the look, colours and feel of the bouquet but can produce a very nice and long effect.

The style and design of your bouquet is best discussed with your florist as there are many styles;

  • Round; traditional bouquet that can include flowers and greenery.
  • Nosegay; small compact bouquet.
  • Cascade; elongated and elaborate, dense with flowers at the top and tapering toward the bottom with trailing greenery.
  • Arm bouquet; long-stemmed flowers gathered and carried in the arms, similar to a pageant bouquet.
  • Hand-tied; simple cluster of flowers, tied with a bow or ribbon, with the ends exposed.
  • Single stem; one single long-stemmed flower with the emphasis on decorative features such as trailing ribbons.
  • Basket; a basket of flowers, often used in outdoor weddings.
  • Wrist; a sophisticated look, more like a corsage than a bouquet.
The style of bouquet you choose will influence which flowers and colours are used and while all flowers convey thoughtfulness and love you should pay attention to the complicated lexicon of flowers. The experts disagree on the "true meaning" of many flowers and most have different meanings to different people but here are some of the more traditional meanings:
